A Microsoft disponibilizou nesta quarta-feira novas versões preview do Windows XP e Windows Server 2003 64 bits e também anunciou a mudança no nome de ambos.
O que era conhecido antes como “Windows XP 64-bit for Extended 64-bit Systems” agora é apenas “Windows XP Professional x64 Edition”. A versão para servidores, que tinha o nome de “Windows Server 2003 for 64-Bit Extended Systems” será conhecida agora como “Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition” .
Além da mudança nos nomes, a Microsoft disponibilizou para download gratuitamente a versão beta do Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, o envio de CDs deve começar já no final de Agosto. O download é um pouco grande - cerca de 450MB - portanto, usuários qu7e quiserem pedir o CD ao invés de baixar a imagem via Internet devem ir ao site da Microsoft para fazer o pedido. O CD é gratuito, mas as taxas de entrega ($8 a $13) podem ser cobradas.
O Windows XP Professional x64 deverá custar o mesmo que sua versão 32 bits, segundo anúncio da própria Microsoft, e as 3 versões do Windows Server 2003 x64 devem vir com preços semelhantes ao das versões 32 bits Standard, Enterprise e Datacenter.
O lançamento oficial dos sistemas de 64 bits da Microsoft foi adiado do final de 2004 para 2005, segundo anúncio feito pela empresa em Julho passado.
Microsoft on Wednesday released public previews of the 64-bit editions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as it changed the official names of the high-end operating systems.
What was formerly dubbed “Windows XP 64-bit for Extended 64-bit Systems” will now go by the moniker of “Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.” The server version, which went by the mouthful of “Windows Server 2003 for 64-Bit Extended Systems” will from this point on be called “Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition.”
Along with the name change, Microsoft posted a free beta version of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition for downloading, and will ship it on CD later this month. The download is huge -- around 450MB -- so users who want a copy on CD should head to the Microsoft site to place an order. The CD is free, but an $8 to $13 shipping and handling charge applies.
Windows XP Professional x64 will be priced at the same level as the 32-bit version of Windows XP Pro, Microsoft said in a statement, and the three versions of Windows Server 2003 x64 will come with price tags similar to their 32-bit Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter cousins.
Microsoft also promised that it would allow customers to trade-in licenses for the 32-bit version of the operating systems for 64-bit editions when the OSes go final in the first half of 2005.
Just last month, Microsoft announced it was delaying the 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 from a late-2004 roll out, and slating them for release in 2005.
